I am delighted to announce that nominations are now open for MITO’s inaugural Industry Awards.
These awards, an integral part of the MITO Industry Summit and Awards taking place on 1 September, are designed to celebrate excellence, leadership, and impact in industry training across the industries MITO supports: automotive, commercial road transport, extractives, drilling, gas, and logistics.
The 1st quarter of the 2026 year ending March 31st saw a rebound for new tractor deliveries vs the previous two months. With YTD deliveries sitting 5% ahead of last year at 649 units, this was welcome and somewhat surprising news given the previous two months performance were lagging behind last year.
The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) is actively helping the food and fibre sector navigate challenges arising from the Middle East conflict and supporting continued trade.
Last Friday 27/3, I was invited to a briefing session with Ray Smith Director General/Chief Executive of MPI. I had a subsequent session with one of the Deputy Director General’s on Tuesday. The purpose of both session was to give the key people across the primary sector a briefing on the Government’s Fuel Response Plan and an opportunity to feed into MPI’s planning from a primary sector perspective.
I hope the run into Easter is going well. We are about to enter the TAMA membership renewal period for the 26/27 year with membership invoices being sent out shortly.
It’s been a while since we have been down south, so to kick off 2026 we are going to hold our first ever mini industry catch up around the Southern Field Days.

With machinery and tractor deliveries enjoying a bit of forward momentum at the moment, it feels like 2025 is starting more positively than the prior year. As TAMA looks forward to membership renewal for the 25/26 year we have some equally positive news to share.
Making the effort to get off farm
Sometimes when you love what you do, it’s hard to know when to pull the pin each day.
Wairarapa sheep farmer, horse-breaker and rugby coach James Bruce (pictured above) makes sure he has other interests to get him off farm and stay Farmstrong.
You may or may not be aware of the “Right to Repair Bill” which is currently going through the Parliamentary Process. The primary focus of the Bill is focused on domestic household appliances and the right to repair those items. The driver is to reduce the number of consumable household items going to land fill. The objectives of the Bill are good but there is potential for some unforeseen impact on our sector.
